İCBARİ vs KASKO: How to Actually Insure the Car You Just Imported

8 Aug 2026 5 min · read

Among the documents required to register your imported car with DYP is an İCBARİ insurance certificate. But what that insurance actually covers, how it's priced, and whether it protects your own vehicle isn't always clear. Here's the breakdown.

What İCBARİ actually is

İCBARİ (mandatory third-party liability insurance) is legally required for every vehicle owner in Azerbaijan. Important: this insurance covers damage you cause to someone else in an accident — not your own car. If you're at fault in a collision, İCBARİ pays for the other party's injury and property damage; repairing your own vehicle isn't included.

Compensation is capped at up to 5,000 AZN per person for health-related damage.

How the premium is calculated

The base amount is 50 AZN (unchanged for 2026), but the final cost is multiplied by several coefficients:

In practice, this means your first İCBARİ premium on a freshly imported car — especially with less driving experience and a larger engine — can come in higher than expected.

How risky is driving without it?

Under Article 469.3 of the Administrative Offenses Code, driving without a valid İCBARİ policy carries a 50 AZN fine for individuals. But the fine isn't the real risk — if you cause an accident while uninsured, you're personally on the hook for the other party's entire damages, which can easily run into thousands of manat.

So what's KASKO?

KASKO is voluntary, not mandatory — and it fills the gap İCBARİ leaves open: it covers damage to your own vehicle (at-fault accidents, theft, fire, natural disasters). For a car you imported from a US auction, with real money tied up in it (purchase price + customs + shipping), KASKO is worth seriously considering — İCBARİ alone doesn't protect that investment at all.

What to keep in mind

Bottom line

İCBARİ is a legal requirement that protects the other party — not your car. For a vehicle you imported and put real money into, treating KASKO as an added layer of protection is the sensible move.
